There is no one, standard curriculum for a degree in Exercise Science, Wellness and Kinesiology or Exercise Physiology, as you can imagine. However, depending on your area of interest there are basic courses which will be included in most curricula. Best Medical Degrees has published a ranking of Best Online Bachelor's Degree Programs in Kinesiology and Exercise Science and Best Online Master's Degree Programs in Exercise Science, Wellness and Kinesiology and we've reviewed here the most common coursework in this area. Many colleges and universities use the term Exercise Science to cover a wide range of academic study, which may include:
Anatomy
A working knowledge of this natural science will allow for a greater understanding of connective tissues, muscle tissues, nervous tissue and surface anatomy (that which is readily seen).
Biology
This science investigates the physical structure, chemical composition and function and development of living organisms.
Nutrition
Courses in nutrition will examine the role of what we eat and how we utilize the nutrients and minerals and its relationship to health, diet and disease processes.
Physiology
This field of study examines how the biological mechanisms work to keep us alive and functioning. Studies in exercise physiology focus on how movement benefits those mechanical systems.
Injury Prevention
Utilizing knowledge of how the body moves and functions, injury prevention studies the assessment and evaluation of physical strains, accidents or due to illness.
Psychology
The study of behavior, conscious or unconcious thought, motivation as it relates to the biological, psychological and social interactions. Often the study of ethics will also be included.
Biomechanics
These studies may include structural mechanics of bone physiology, muscle mechanics, and connective tissue principles.
Exercise Prescription
This curriculum may include the assessment and design of individualized exercise programs as it relates to health and disease.
Nutrition
This course of study may include the interaction of nutrition with molecular and cellular biochemistry of metabolism.
Kinesiology
Kinesiology is the scientific study of human movement. It incorporates the studies of biomechanical physiological and psychological tenets and principles of movement.
Coaching Methodology
Coaching, the art of teaching and mentoring, may take a variety of forms in the study of Exercise Science. It may include assessment and analysis health behavior.
Fitness and Wellness
These subjects may include studies in assessing physical needs and habits of people with diabetes, disabilities, obesity or cancer.
Research Methodology
While a broad term, research methodology trains the student to take a broad concept and to utilize either applied research concepts or fundamental research to arrive at a precise conclusion. These courses will often include discussion of data collection methods, analysis and application.
Capstone Projects
Capstone projects are frequently required for graduation and are often intensive, critical thinking exercises on a specific topic of interest and using research methods, are designed to culminate in a written paper or report. Some programs will also ask that students present their research findings to faculty.
This list is by no means intended to be comprehensive; but, does provide suggested basic fields of study for graduate students in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Physiology, Health and Wellness or Athletic Trainers.
